Have you seen the latest Toonami lineup? There is exactly one show involving mecha. And yet, they still show all the ads like it's a mega mecha show! Here's the lineup: Hamtaro, Zoids, Batman Beyond, Powerpuff Girls, Dragonball, Dragonball Z. Do you see mecha there? ONLY BARELY.
See, I think they could replace Batman and PpG with some form of Gundam and some other mecha show - maybe Big O or, God forbid, something NEW. Sorry, but Zoids just isn't cuttin it. The people demand HUGE MECHA.
But now that we're on the subject of Toonami, let me just say how much I love Dragonball Z. Yes, I do love Dragonball, but we all know it just became totally the bomb with the arrival of Raditz. And I'm not just saying that because Raditz is tha bomb. Vegeta is also tha bomb. Ginyu is tha bomb. And of course, Cell is tha bomb. What? There are some heros that are awesome, but in general, it's the villains that make the show great. I really think the space alien element makes it that much cooler, too.
Goku is definitely cooler when he's a kid, so is Krillin. Pilaf and his minions are great. Yamcha and Puar were much better before they were pansies. Oolong and Yajirobe are always funny. Master Roshi, Chichi, Bulma, and most of the other DB villains are just so-so. The situations are mediocre, altho the comedy is pure genius. But once the truth about Goku's space alien heritage is revealed, it just gets real good. Yeah there's a loss of humour, but it's made up in action.
Vegeta is just mean as a snarling cur. He's a total bastard, and even after Gokutachi show him mercy, he's STILL being a total bastard! That magnificent bastard! He had a bad habit of killing his comrades, and you don't get much meaner than that. I figure that's why Raditz wanted to find Kakarott in the first place; so he'd have an ally against bossy Vegeta and together they could veto him.
Freeza, hell, Freeza explains WHY Vegeta is such an ass. It's pretty clear to me that Vegeta was Freeza's "whippin boy". Even without the sissy voice of the dub, it's pretty obvious what Freeza had Vegeta doing as a child. This, I suspect, is why Vegeta had no problems killing his own buddies. I think he was glad to be rid of Nappa and Raditz, who, although they actually had no clue, he suspected of knowing what went on between he and Freeza. Or should that be "whom"? Anyway, back to the discussion.
So, we have Freeza molesting Vegeta as a child. Then Vegeta betrays Freeza, and what does Freeza do? One of the absolutely meanest beatings in Dragonball history. Most of the time, beatings were only administered up to the point where the victim could not fight back, then the victim was summarily killed or allowed to escape. But you can tell that Freeza was pounding Vegeta because he thought it was funny. He enjoyed knowing that there was nothing the Saiyan could do about being slowly pummelled to death. And it was slow. And painful. And desperately mean-spirited.
Damn, it's 1am. I have to go to bed. I'll finish this later.
