Otaku Time!

Feh, I know everyone else is out renting FLCL, because it's over on CN. But I just watched that! Why would I rent it now? I haven't seen Harlock Saga in eons! I only saw it on Toonami Reactor, on my old PC that had a really crappy vid card.
Here's why Harlock Saga rules.
1. It's based on a great opera, the Ring Cycle! Wagner! Did you know that Hitler had a fling with Wagner's daughter in law or something? Anyway. The Ring Cycle is based on Scandinavian mythology!
.b. It's got really great music, ripped off from the opera! I don't recall if it's a complete ripoff or just inspired by, but it's good. Sets a very good mood for the show.
8, They kept all the opening and closing credits, for each episode!
3.) Captain Harlock! 'Nuff said!
zibby.) Space pirates!

I do wish it was a little louder, surround-sound wise. But hey! Space pirates!

Is this typically available at Blockbuster on DVD, or is it something i'm going to have to actually find a local Real Video Store for? Anything based on the Ring Cycle has to be at least interesting...

Die Dritte Reich was a big patron of Wagner... now we know why. It wasn't just pro-"Aryan" ideology! It was because die Fuehrer bang-tet die Niece des Wagner.

I found it at blockbuster. I think it's pretty mainstream, but then, I live in an asian community.

Heh. I live in Chapel Hill, NC. Not only do we have UNC-CH, but there's also Research Triangle Park (big generic tech playground), as well as Duke and NCCU in Durham and NCSU in Raleigh. Around here, you have to watch your feet when you're walking, lest you trample highly-active Chinese toddlers. Not to mention the two Indian restaurants (mmm... vindalooooo *drool*) a couple miles from each other, and a few more sprinkled about.

Of course, we don't have too many Japanese, though, which is the Asian that matters, so i'm probably screwwed there. But we do have a lot of useless college kids and a strong CS program, so maybe they'll pander to them and i can reap the benefits =)

(Little Chinese kids are almost as cute as kittens. Especially when they're very quietly stalking around a graduate library, *clop clop*, little flip-flops slapping the floor, holding their hands together behind their back and staring in wonder at all the books on the huuuuge shelves)

(can you tell i'm trying to accomplish something tonight?)

Oh, and also, the opera is how Hitler met the neice/daughter/whatever of Wagner. I think he was just flirting with her because he had a crush on Wagner. Plus, he got into the opera for free. If memory serves, the Wagner chick was way more keen on Hitler than he was on her. Or I have that backwards. At any rate, it was unrequited love. She was married, via arranged marriage iirc, to some old coot she didn't really care for.

The music in the anime is done by Moscow Philharmonic or something. It's some big orchestra in Moscow, that much I know.

Space pirates are so overdone in anime. Well, not as overdone as space cowboys. Dammit, now I'm gonna have that song in my head all day.
