Zettaireido - Are we not men?
Why did I get up at 5am on a Saturday? It is because I went to bed at 10 or so. I did have one interesting dream, but now I don't remember any of it except that Hughes was in it and there were kittens. If I recall more during the day, I'll post it here. Probably had a Hughes dream because today Holly is having her birthday party ^_^

Kym, if you're not working, go to the Cedar Hill skating rink at like 10am!

I still have to go get a present. I'm not sure what to get, which is why I have not bought a present prior to now. I suck! I guess I'll just putter around at Wal-mart until inspiration hits.

Let me take a few quick moments to tell you about Fiber to the Premises. I can't believe it took me all week to remember to tell, or they told me not to tell and now I'm in big troubles. It is a new technology that beats the pants off of cable internet. I can tell you that it was rolled out in Keller, TX the other day, because they had a press conference about it, thus it must be public knowledge. They won't tell me where they are going to put it next, but I hope it is Plano. It should snowball from here, and eventually when it's global like the internet, we will be able to get TV stations from around the world via internet! Now THAT'S a service worth paying for!
But in the short-term, 30Mb/5Mb in the home. Ehehehehe. I'm just glad they realized that DSL sucks.

Also, I love bittorrent.

Mmmm...bittorrent. I found out about torrents a couple of months ago, and I have to agree on the whole love thing.

It's great not having to wait a year for Enterprise to screen here, and then only at 2am. I'm hoping to view the next series of the Amazing Race in the same fashion.

Azureus is probably now my most used application. I really don't know how I ever lived without it.
Are you gonna eat that?

Fiber is really overrated. Bellsouth has been rolling it out for a long time down in S. Florida (something about the environment liking to eat, both physically and chemically) copper wires. They give you a seriously fat interconnect into their network, then throttle the hell out of it upstream. Bandwidth is not cheap (only because of near-collusion by the oligarchy that maintains the Internetwork), therefore nobody will give you serious BW to play with without making you pay serious money for it.

Sad, but true.

The goal is to compete with cable. The preliminary design is to provide speeds of 5, 15, and 30, so yes, 30 is on the high end. The point is it will be available to residential customers and it is better than cable. I could get a major discount if I wanted DSL, but there is just no comparison in DSL and cable right now. Fiber puts VZ in competition with Comcast (in north Texas, anyway), which is where we want to be.

Really what I'm keen on is the video capabilities, which I believe they said the technologies will be ready in 2005 but I don't really remember. I was on a serious coffee rush that afternoon and could hardly stand still for the preso.
I know that the guy gave us some examples of how fiber is better than cable for data, voice, and video, but I don't remember what he said. I'm a bad telecom employee.
